There is also the fact that if the Packers needed help at cornerback, they could likely call former veteran Tramon Williams, who remains a free agent and has indicated he would be open to returning to Green Bay in 2020.
Williams could help this defense in 2020. Not re-signing him could prove to be a big mistake.
Williams, who turned 37 in March, played all 16 games for the Packers as Mike Pettine’s slot cornerback last season. He was effective, producing two interceptions and eight pass breakups while allowing a passer rating of just 79.3 on targets into his coverage. At Pro Football Focus, he posted an 82.2 grade in coverage over 504 snaps against the pass, marking one of the best seasons of his long career.
Aaron Rodgers knows what Williams adds to the locker room. When the Packers re-signed Williams in 2018, he told reporters, “Tramon, I can’t say enough about him,” Rodgers said. “Not only is he a fantastic player…but he’s also a fantastic locker room guy. You can’t have enough great leaders like Tramon Williams.”
