Tramon Williams signed with the Packers this past offseason to add much-needed depth to the secondary. And with him turning 36 next year, there are questions about his future with the franchise.

Williams spoke to reporters after the Packers’ 31-0 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday and he said he will be back next season.

“I’m under contract,” Williams said, “That’s the plan.”

Williams is one of the few players on the roster who was on the Super Bowl team in 2010. Ever since the Packers won their fourth Super Bowl and 13th NFL championship, they have done everything they can to get back to that point. The expectations were high for the Packers this year as they got Aaron Rodgers back after missing the majority of last season with a broken collarbone. But as Williams pointed out, there’s more to winning a Super Bowl then just overall talent.

“You feel you have the teams to win it, but it’s not always about that,” Williams said. “Most of the time, you see the people who win it is the team who gets hot in December or a team who is built to make that run in the playoffs,” Williams said. “As good as the teams that we had, it’s just hard to get back there for whatever reason.”

Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy decided the biggest issue was Mike McCarthy and he was fired as the Packers head coach on Dec. 2. So now the Packers are looking for a new head coach and they have already interviewed former Colts head coach Chuck Pagano and former Colts and Lions head coach Jim Caldwell. Green Bay is also looking to interview Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald and they will interview Packers interim head coach Joe Philbin

Whoever is the next head coach, he knows he has a good leader on defense in Williams. When Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was traded earlier this season, Williams made the move from starting cornerback to starting safety. He finishes the 2018 season with 54 tackles and two passes defended in 16 games.

Williams originally joined the Packers in 2007 and was on the roster for eight seasons. During his time with the Packers, Williams recorded 114 passes defended and 28 interceptions. His best season came in 2010 as he posted 20 passes defended and six interceptions. He reached the Pro Bowl that season and helped the Packers win the Super Bowl.

From 2015-2016, Williams played for the Browns and did not have the same success. In 22 games with the Browns, the Louisiana Tech alum recorded 14 passes defended and two interceptions. He was cut from the Browns back in February 2017. Williams then signed with the Arizona Cardinals and had one of his better seasons, recording two interceptions and 10 pass breakups. Since 2006, Williams has recorded eight seasons with at least 10 interceptions and pass breakups, and that ties him for the most for any NFL player during that span.
